Frankfurt am Main offers many sightseeing attractions. Deciding which one is the most extraordinary is no easy task. One really has to come to Frankfurt and see for him - or her - self. We have compiled a short selection to give you a taste of things to come, as well as some helpful hints for your individual sightseeing tour. As a rule, every tour begins with your arrival in Frankfurt. The city skyline, the modern landmark of this business and finance metropolis, stands at the ready to welcome visitors from afar. At the city centre, one finds the historical Römer, Frankfurt Cathedral, St. Paul´s Church and the Goethe-House within very close proximity to one another, yet still within sight of the modern banking district. Close by, Frankfurt´s museum landscape is on show along the Main River on the unique museum embankment. And if you find yourself on a shopping spree though downtown Frankfurt, make sure to take some rest in one of the many streetside cafés - it´s the perfect way to take in the charm of the city, particularly on a warm summer´s day. Frankfurt´s local beverage of preference, also known as "Ebbelwei" or "Stöffche", is as much a part of Old Sachsenhausen as is "Frau Rauscher", one of Frankfurt´s most-loved personalities, who has gained quite a reputation for giving patrons a spray-down with the garden hose during hot spells, among other things. Thanks to the Zeil - downtown Frankfurt's superb shopping promenade - and the relaxed atmosphere of the various small downtown shopping districts, both window shoppers and serious shoppers have a comprehensive and colourful shopping range to choose from.
The focal point of shopping activities in Frankfurt's city centre is provided by the Zeil promenade, the shopping centre Zeilgalerie, and a number of excellent department stores. Located in the middle of downtown Frankfurt, one finds the Goethestrasse, where shoppers will find boutiques offering the latest in designer fashion ware. Anyone requiring a little refreshment during their shopping spree can dive into a proverbial ocean of restaurants in the "Freßgass", Frankfurt's culinary mile. The offer range of downtown Frankfurt is rounded off by numerous museums, galleries and street-side cafés which are all within a stone's throw from the main city centre shopping areas.
If you prefer a moiré leisurely shopping atmosphere, we suggest that you head toward the Frankfurt city districts of Bornheim, Bockenheim or Sachsenhausen. The numerous boutiques, second-hand shops and cafés located in Berger Street and the Leipziger and Schweizer Streets invite one and all to a shopping spree that is accompanied by an ambiance of internationality.
Frankfurt offers several large-scale shopping centres, where you can often find everything you're looking for under one roof. Shopping centres situated outside of the city centre include those in the Nordweststadt and at the airport. Downtown Frankfurt offers the architecturally modern and multi-storied Zeilgalerie with a wider range of shops.
Frankfurt am Main is a place of great culinary diversity. Over the years, chefs from over 70 faraway countries have made the Main metropolis their home, spoiling their guests with a countless variety of specialities from both their distant and nearby homelands. Keen for Mediterranean cuisine or perhaps Sushi or Thai? What about traditional German fare or local apple-wine cuisine? The choice is endless. It is said that the culinary delights on offer in Frankfurt are as varied and international as the city itself.
Local Frankfurt favourites such as "handkaes' with music" (small cheeses marinated in a vinegar and onion sauce), the legendary green sauce (traditionally served with potatoes and hard-boiled eggs) or loin ribs with sauerkraut offer a stark culinary contrast to international specialities and spices hailing from the four corners of the Earth.
